What in the World Does the Farm Bill Have to Do With Hunger and Poverty?

You might be surprised to learn that most of the nation’s anti-hunger programs are part of a massive aid package supporting farmers. It’s set to expire at the end of September.

You might be reading a whole lot about the Farm Bill and whether Congress will vote to continue funding it. You may be wondering what it means for you and the 98% of the US population who are not farmers.

Let us break it down for you:

  • 40 million low-income families rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for assistance to buy food. It’s funded by the Farm Bill.
  • Funding for farmers markets, community-supported agriculture (CSA) programs, and initiatives promoting urban agriculture are all part of the Farm Bill's strategy to bring fresh, affordable, locally-grown food closer to families. This helps improve the nutritional quality of everyone’s diets and contributes to healthier lifestyles.
  • Programs that promote health and wellness, including a school-based program that provides kids from low-income households with healthy, fresh fruit and vegetable snacks beyond breakfast and lunchtime, are paid for by the Farm Bill. It also funds public health campaigns that raise awareness about healthy eating habits.
  • Programs that support conservation efforts, soil health, and sustainable farming practices and safeguard the environment for present and future generations are included in Farm Bill funding. This work brings us all cleaner water sources and healthier ecosystems.
  • The Farm Bill invests in research and innovation that lead to technological developments that benefit all Americans, from improving food safety standards to enhancing agricultural productivity.

While the Farm Bill might be rooted in agriculture, its impact extends far beyond the fields and rural communities and supports American families nationwide.
