The Community Builders Challenge asks students to work together to build dream communities promoting empathy and kindness.

We are starting 2024 with a really exciting new Red Nose Day in School project that will help kids unleash their imaginations and build their dream communities by visualizing ways they can change their communities and the world.

Comic Relief US has partnered with the LEGO Group to launch a nationwide "Community Builders Challenge" that asks students, ages 6 to 12, to work together to reimagine and build “dream communities” that promote empathy and kindness for others. This initiative is a fusion of our shared vision to empower children to inspire real-world change.

To support the Challenge, we created a new hands-on learning experience designed to unlock students' creativity by asking them to imagine — and then build — solutions for everyday problems they see around them: Are there ways to make it easier for everyone to play together? What if you could change how to share food? How about a new green space for a neighborhood with no grass or trees?

The "Community Builders Challenge" is open to schools and afterschool programs across the country, and we hope you’ll share this link with any educators you know. Getting started is easy: just download the lesson guide and interactive activity sheet and then submit the students’ creations by April 15, 2024. Entries will be judged by Red Nose Day ambassadors and LEGO® enthusiasts, with winners announced in May.

The “Community Builders Challenge” joins our existing Red Nose Day in School programs, FriendSkills, and Everyday Heroes, all of which are free and designed to teach young students about the impacts of poverty on children, foster empathy building, and celebrate acts of kindness in the classroom and beyond. It is a year-round program that includes lesson plans, routines, and videos to help students practice core reading and writing skills while also helping them realize their power to make a difference for others.

The “Community Builders Challenge” is an extension of the Build the Change program, supported by the LEGO Foundation. It gives children a voice and allows them to use their creativity to solve challenges with LEGO® bricks and other creative materials as they learn through play. To ensure all children have access to materials for the “Community Builders Challenge,” teachers at Title 1 schools can request LEGO® Replay kits at rednoseday.org/LEGO while supplies last.
