Roots of Resilience Is Redefining Brownsville Through Youth-Led Storytelling

This Black History Month, we’re celebrating the changemakers from our Black-led grantee partners driving meaningful impact in their communities. Quardean Lewis-Allen, Founder and Executive Director of Youth Design Center, shares how young creatives are reclaiming the narrative of Brownsville, Brooklyn—a neighborhood rich in history and culture. Despite facing systemic socio-economic challenges, Brownsville is a community of resilience, creativity, and activism. It’s also home to Youth Design Center, a creative agency and innovation hub where young people gain skills in design, digital storytelling, and STEAM—opening pathways to post-secondary education, economic opportunities, and community impact.

For too long, Brownsville, Brooklyn has been defined by statistics rather than stories. At Youth Design Center, we are committed to shifting that narrative through creativity, technology, and youth-driven storytelling. Our Roots of Resilience docuseries is a powerful example of how young leaders are reclaiming their community’s legacy, using media to highlight the strength, history, and activism that have long defined Brownsville.
